Buying Help on College Application Essays

Jay Mathews examines a WWW service that -- for $79.95 -- edits college application essays, making, in Matthews' view, "the college application process even less rational and fair than it already is. It seems like one more slip down a greasy slope into resume padding, expense account fraud and other similarly character-corroding but popular aspects of American life." In addition to those slippery slopes, how will students who can afford this service (likely already wealthy and advantaged, relatively speaking) going to discern between this kind of service for an application essay and purchasing similar services for their course work. Will this cause a mindset that leads to purchasing papers for courses?
